AI can look different! Zine-making workshop to imagine alternative AI futures

In a hands-on workshop organized by Yan Cong and Francesca Mauri, on behalf of the Feminist Generative AI Lab, we invite participants to engage in critical fabulation to imagine alternative AI futures through zine-making.

The future of AI is often imagined through a relatively narrow lens. It is urgent that we challenge the linear understanding of progress and imagine futures as multiple. Drawing on Ruha Benjamin’s idea of AI as “Abundant Imagination” (2024), the workshop invites participants to speculate on AI futures that are non-extractivist and regenerative, grounded in collectivity and solidarity, and designed with marginalised people and more-than-human worlds at the centre rather than the peripheries.

Using an A4 one-page zine as a creative prompt, participants will explore their imagined futures through drawing, writing, stamping and collaging. No prior experience with zine-making is needed. All materials will be provided.

The activity is in-person only, with a maximum of 20 participants. The zines produced will be shared as an open resource after the conference, upon consent.
