The Uncoders
A card game (feminist AI toolkit?) aimed at sensitizing the public to the risks and implications of using generative AI, through a feminist lens.
Are you a user of generative AI and curious about its societal impacts? Are you new to feminist theory or already familiar with it? Then this game is for you!
The Uncoders opens up spaces to build education and awareness around AI, justice, and equity through collaborative and hands-on exploration. It invites players to question the outputs of generative AI models, explore the hidden values and assumptions, and reflect on how these technologies shape our everyday lives.
Throughout the game, players analyze different cases of prompts and outputs generated by various AI models. Through critical thinking, reflection, open discussion, and collaboration, they "uncode" these cases, identify challenges and concerns, and collectively brainstorm ideas for improvement.
Players also explore feminist theories and perspectives as tools for critical analysis. Each player takes on a unique identity in the form of a passport inspired by feminist principles (e.g. Binary Smasher, Humanizer, Localizer etc.), encouraging them to view each case through a different lens. By bringing these diverse perspectives together, players uncover how different experiences and ways of knowing can reveal biases, challenge assumptions, and imagine more just and equitable AI systems.

The Uncoders is also available for purchase as a complete game package. It can be played by 1 to 5 players and is designed to be played multiple times, offering new learning experiences with each session and enough content to keep players engaged and curious.
